The Ahimsa Collective presents our famous Clown Workshop: A two-day, eight hour crash course designed to birth your very own Clown, and get you started in the performance clowning world.
This kind of clowning can be categorized as "performance clowning"- it is very, very different from the typical "birthday" or even circus clowns most of us have interactions with. Each performer, over time, creates an intricate, fully-dimensional, emotional characters, who then can interact with their world with or without a director present. We believe in honesty over being funny- which often produces hilarious and heartbreaking results.
As a troupe, Everybody Nose collaborates together to create boundary-pushing, exciting theater that can make an audience go from laughter to tears in a matter of moments. By putting on this workshop, we're giving you the opportunity to share this experience with us.
This kind of performance clowning asks the artist to "release the clown" that lives inside them. For some, thier clowns are inspired by their inner child, their biggest fears personified, or who they hope to be. This workshop will provide one-on-one training in this "clown world", including birthing your very own, unique-to-you clown, learning the power of eye-contact, silent comedy/tragedy, improvisation and more. Once you have undergone this training, you will have the chance to audition for Ahimsa's Clown Troupe: Everybody Nose, and will be able to recieve extensive training in this amazing, up-and-coming art form for free while performing with the troupe year-round!
The class is taught by Cambria Beilstein, who has taught this form of clowning in Korea, Italy, and the United States, as well as Negin Singh, a trained clown and regular performer. Both have been trained under Eli Simon, who is thought to be the creator of this specific art-form.
Acclaim from past students:
- "You guys did an incredible job of cultivating an open and welcoming atmosphere surrounding a risky idea: throwing us to the clowning wolves and trusting that we would learn to swim (please ignore the mixed metaphor.)"
- "I want to thank you guys for a truly exceptional workshop. Forgetting for a minute what was achieved by the group, I was impressed by your professionalism and calm leading a huge group in a room the size of my living room."
